Art

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities pupils learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments. They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life and in different times and cultures.

KS-3 ART

Pupils at KS-3 Art follow the National Curriculum that covers a broad range of art that enables pupils to; explore and develop ideas; investigate and make art craft and design; evaluate and develop work. At key stage 3 there is a formal requirement to conduct end-of-key-stage assessment in art and design, and to report using the levels. As part of pupils’ learning, assessment does take place to inform the pupil and the teacher about planning and progression. Teachers use their professional judgement to determine the most effective method of gathering evidence of pupils’ progress and the most appropriate way of reporting to parents.

KS-4 ART

The GCSE un-endorsed Art and Photography course gives students the opportunity to create fine art, graphic art and
3-D work through the exploration and manipulation of materials, paint, printmaking, graphics and a wide range of processes plus in photography using both digitised and film images. This is achieved through developing personal responses and an understanding of the observation of work by other artists from a variety of styles and traditions. Students have been given the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to develop skills in exploring 2D and 3-D techniques, to try out 2D and 3-D media and technique and be able to use 2D and 3-D techniques to develop their own individual ideas.

Through this students have:

  • developed an ability to contribute to group and whole class discussion;
  • developed critical awareness in relation to other styles of art work from contemporary, historical and cultural context.
  • explored the mark making properties of a wide range of art mediums including paint, pastels, graphite pencil, charcoal, colouring pencils and wax crayons; (in photography explored both digitised and film images)
  • Developed an individual style of art and incorporated this with an understanding of other artists and their particular styles of art, craft and design;
  • Produced a wide range of paintings and drawings to build up a reasonable art portfolio (produced digitised/ film in photography);
  • Understood the importance of health and safety when working in a practical environment in particular an art studio (Photography darkroom);
