KS3

In Key Stage 3 English we work on improving basic literacy skills and allowing each pupil to achieve the best they can. We like to promote enjoyment of the subject and use an extensive range of strategies to do this. We use a broad scheme of work to allow pupils to encounter a variety of texts. Our scheme of work is based largely on Key Stage 3 National Literacy Strategy but we also incorporate areas of Key Stage 2 to make sure that the work is appropriately differentiated. Pupils will practise grammar, spelling and punctuation skills in order to bring their basic skills to a level that is the optimum for each child. Pupils will read a diverse range of texts in guided reading sessions to improve their sight reading, analytical skills and appreciation of literature. Pupils will use their experience of these texts to assimilate features and learn how to create their own pieces of written work in a variety of styles.

Qualifications

Pupils who are consistently working above level 3 in year 9 will be offered the chance to sit their SAT examination. This is the same exam as all year 9 pupils across the country sit and will give pupils exam experience and also an idea of how well they can achieve under these conditions and highlight areas for future development.

Skills

At Key Stage 3 we aim to solidify basic literacy skills such as spelling, sentence construction, writing styles, reading, speaking and listening, in order to allow pupils to be confident when moving into Key Stage 4. However, English is not simply about being able to read and write. Pupils are expected to work towards being more aware and in control of their learning, we do this by incorporating a variety of learning techniques in order to appeal to all types of learners, including the following:

  • using analytical thinking skills
  • independent work skills
  • partnered activities
  • group work
  • self and peer assessment
  • drama activities

Equipment

We recognise that pupils have different ways of learning and, therefore, teach using a variety of stimuli. This includes incorporating the use of interactive whiteboards and ICT; video and DVDs, to allow pupils to access performances of texts; and a wide range of reading texts for all abilities.

KS4

Speaking and Listening
Pupils speak and listen in a variety of situations (1:1, pairs, small groups, class groups and assemblies) about themselves, their hopes and activities. They have taken part in, for example drama role plays and presentations. They are encouraged to give their opinion of the work they are doing.

Reading
Pupils are encouraged to read interest books and magazines of their choice. In school they read a variety of fiction and non-fiction both to themselves, the class and to a member of staff. Each half term there is a class topic. Pupils answer comprehension questions, give their opinions, describe characters and predict events. At the end of the work pupils review the book, story or topic.

Writing
Pupils write for a variety of purposes e.g. letters, reports and answers to questions. They are expected to use basic punctuation and spelling correctly. They use key word cards and dictionaries either independently or with support as required. Cursive script is encouraged where possible but the emphasis is on neat, legible work. Pupils are encouraged to use word processing packages as this enables work to be presented to a high standard.

Units covered/ Qualifications for subject

Pupils are entered for the Entry Level examination and where possible duel entered for GCSE. Both courses involve a written examination and coursework folder to show their ability in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. In addition to this, pupils are taught elements selected from the KS3 National Literacy Strategy.

Skills Required/developed

In addition to the skills mentioned above, pupils are also helped to develop their ability to work with a partner and a team, taking on a variety of roles, as well as the ability to work independently.

Specialist Equipment used

Pupils use ICT equipment to aid their learning including laptops and interactive whiteboards and a variety of high quality software programmes are available. Audio equipment is used for speaking and listening exercises. Video and DVDs are used to provide pupils with an experience of performance of certain texts.
