Bonjour et bienvenue……… Hello
and welcome!
As you might have guessed, we study French here at Oakwood
as our Modern Foreign Language.
Since Oakwood is a signing school, we also teach the pupils
to sign in French at the same time! We are very lucky to have
moved into a fantastic new French room this year and have bought
lots of new resources to support our learning. We have launched
a new French curriculum programme and a new assessment scheme,
too.
To help you to do your best, lessons have clear Learning Objectives
and our achievement levels are written in a way that is pupil-friendly
and parent-friendly, too. We make extensive use of Talking
Partners and we use Success criteria so you know what you need
to have done to succeed. Much of the language in the lesson
is in French – it is amazing how quickly our pupils pick
it up!
In KS 3, pupils in Year 7 and 8 follow some of the units form
our scheme of work, which has been adapted from QCA KS2 French
units. French is also being reintroduced into Year 9 as from
September 2007.
In KS4, pupils who choose French as an Option will study the
remaining units and follow the exam board syllabus. They will
be able to gain an Entry Level qualification at Level 1,2 or
3 depending upon their achievement and ability. We are also
re-launching the French residential visit for KS4
Curriculum overview and the Units covered
Unit 1 Je parle français! – I speak French!
In this first unit pupils learn to introduce themselves, to
greet others and use simple language of classroom interaction.

their local area. They learn to understand, ask and give

project with a partner school abroad; planning and performing
a concert of French songs and sketches; a French day; video-conferencing
with French-speaking pupils abroad.
Staff involved
Ms Brunt teaches French support by Mrs Burke, as do our 1:1 support staff who work
with individual pupils.
Skills required and developed
The only skills required are to try your best and to enjoy
your learning!
If you do this, then you will be able to speak, sign, read
and write in French! Fantastique!
We also like you to look after your homework book so you can
show off to your parents and carers!
Specialist equipment
Pupils with “Talkers” have their target language
put in for them in French, and are also fully integrated as
we sign as well as speak in French - many thanks are due to
our excellent Speech and Language staff for their input. In
addition, we use a wide range of brand new 3D resources and
games to help you to learn. We use Boardmaker for flashcards
and for display resources in dual language format. We also
use a range of websites and interactive whiteboard software,
including the award winning “Petit Pont”. We have
a CD listening centre with a class set of infra-red headphones – no
more trailing wires. As we like to record your doing your best
work, we also use digital cameras and video cameras.
