Outreach

ICT

Ongoing projects are carried out throughout the year with our feeder schools.  For ICT this includes The Friars, Springwood and Monton Green.  We have also run projects with the Salford Disability Team with regards to training staff and are involved in a project with the young people at the Salford disability forum on Monday evenings.

The outreach teaching serves a number of different purposes:

  • To advance the ICT skills of the learners involved in the projects.
  • To allow the pupils to come into Oakwood in order to gain some form of familiarity.
  •  To allow pupils to use ICT software and Hardware which is ordinarily unavailable to them.

The projects are varied in terms of contents, examples include using Digi Blue Cameras in order to animate scenes from the book “The Twits”, we have also created artwork to be displayed in the Lowry centre based on phrases created in conjunction with the Manchester based poet Mike Gary.

Modern Foreign Languages

Oakwood sends its language specialist into our feeder Primary Schools at Monton Green and at The Friars School in Salford.

Having a specialist teacher has enabled the Primary Schools to prepare their MLD pupils for entry into Oakwood High, as well as enabling the teachers and pupils to meet the objectives set out in the new KS2 Language Framework, which becomes compulsory in all Primary Schools from January 2010.

With a fun approach and the emphasis on phonics and spoken language, the Outreach Programme is proving to be very popular and successful all round.
