Overview

Oakwood High School has now been awarded a third high performing specialist subject status in Sports. This has created various opportunities to enhance the provision of PE through the addition of new qualifications and its subsequent impact on whole school performance.

New PE Teacher!

We are delighted to welcome Mr. Jones, who is new PE Teacher at Oakwood High School. Mr Jones joined us from September 2009 from his studies at Liverpool John Moores University.

PE Across The Curriculum

Physical Education is used as a vehicle to engage and develop pupil learning across the curriculum. The practical nature of the lesson allows some abstract concepts, ideas and principles to be reinforced through the lesson and transfer classroom-based learning into PE. The subject promotes core learning skills such as target setting, teamwork, problem solving, determination, turn taking, and commitment, which impact and support teaching and learning in other areas of the curriculum. These core skills also develop the individual’s personal, social and emotional well-being and confidence in their own independent abilities. In addition to the above the PE department has worked alongside the English, Science and Work Related Learning subject managers to create units of work that allow meaningful and contextual cross-curricular development of these areas. Physical Education also has strong links with citizenship and PSHE whereby classroom based learning is applied into a meaningful and practical context.

Assessment

To ensure a robust system is used for the tracking of pupil progress, pupils are assessed in several ways. Pupils are fitness tested each term and their progress is tracked using an online system created for the specific needs of the pupils. This allows staff to compare pupil’s data within the context of Oakwood High School. Pupils are also assessed each half term on the activity they have been taking part in. Photographic, video and written evidence is collated throughout the year. Individual profiles are also created to allow progress to be monitored and compared each year and plot trends in progress.

Salford School Sports Partnership Awards 2008

The PE department won 1st prize for ‘The developing young people award’ and ‘The high quality school site provision award’ across the Salford Schools Sport Partnership. As a result the department won £600 to contribute towards enhancing the PE curriculum and the resources available to our pupils.
