PLTS

Overview

At Oakwood, our vision is simple, “to mould our pupils into responsible citizens”.  We incorporate a range of programmes that enhance and develop this throughout the school.  Our pupils are provided with countless opportunities to develop their skills in all areas of personal development.
One of the ways we encourage skill development is through the PLTS ‘Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills’.  These include 6 main skills (outlined below) each with a further 6 targets specific to the main skill (see page 2).  Together with these skills, pupils are given the opportunity to develop key skills that will not only accompany them throughout their school life but beyond in extended education and the world of work.
The six main skills are;

  • Independent Enquirers

  • Creative Thinkers

  • Reflective Learners

  • Effective Participants

  • Team Workers

  • Self Managers

From September 2010, these six skills will be embedded into our curriculum in a variety of ways.  Teaching staff have already implemented the links onto their subject matrices and are aware of how PLTS links into their subjects. Our next step is to ensure that pupils are being provided with the opportunity to develop each of the six skills within all aspects of the curriculum. Staff will be invited to workshops, drop in sessions, a larger group meetings to develop awareness of how PLTS can be adapted to suit our pupils.

As a school, we plan to include PLTS in everything that we do and become a more creative and skill based setting for our pupils to flourish and enjoy.

Co-ordinator - Miss S Watts

This is the school’s version of the PLTS.  The language has been adapted to suit the needs of our pupils.  Pupils are aware of how PLTS fit into their subjects. Classrooms have these displayed and they are referred to often within lessons.

Independent Enquirers

Think of questions that will help you find out the information you need to solve problems
Research facts that will help you to make secure decisions
Look at problems from every angle, never give up
Use information that is relevant and useful to you and your team
Dont let anything interfere with the decision making, do what is best for all
Find evidence to back up your decisions

Creative Thinkers

Think of ideas that are outside of the box and take risks
Ask questions to learn more about the task
Build in your ideas with others and negotiate ways to achieve
Make sure you always understand others and ask questions if you are unsure about anything
Perservere with you ideas, try different ways to achieve something but stick with it, don’t just give up
Where ideas change, find new ways to achieve something without having to start again

Reflective Learners

Assess your work and others and think of ways to improve next time
Set small targets to help you achieve your ideas
Stop and review to make sure you don’t need to do anything different
Ask others for praise and feedback and accept it politely
Evaluate your own work and decide on ways to improve for the better
Share your work with others confidently

Effective Participants

Ask others when you are unsure, don’t be afraid to say you don’t understand
Think about your ideas and share them confidently with others
Work step by step, don’t rush to the end, take small steps at a time
Think of ways to improve as a team and individually
Try making others agree with you by thinking carefully about your idea, be confident when you share it and be ready to negotiate with other ideas
Be supportive if others can’t agree, see the good in both ideas and help them to negotiate too

Team Workers

Work with others sensibly remaining open minded
Agree with others when it is a positive decision, offer your thoughts in a constructive way
Take responsibility within your role, if you are leading the group you must organise the team fairly making sure everyone is happy
Be considerate to others feelings, everyone has a right to speak
Be firm about your ideas and thoughts but share them politely
Give your team mates support and criticise them only to improve your outcome

Self Managers

Find new ways to do something, there are many ways to tackle something and you may find different approaches work better for you
Be patient when working on something, stick with it and find solutions or help if you need it
Organise yourself well, make sure you have all the things you need to complete your task before you start it
Take risks, what can you do to make it better?

Be positive if ideas change and dont be afraid to ask for help
Be friendly to others and build friendships  with everyone to achieve a good outcome
