Citizenship / PSHE

Citizenship/PSHE is a carefully coordinated and managed programme at Oakwood High School and is a vital aspect of every pupil’s entitlement. It provides experiences which promote the development of healthy lifestyles and which contribute to the quality and responsibilities of life and the environment in order to develop an understanding of becoming informed citizens.

Citizenship/PSHE is taught as a discrete subject on our timetable and is also delivered through Active Tutorials as well as other curriculum subjects. It is delivered by a teacher and teaching assistants. Our work covers topics such as Ourselves, Safety, Drug Education, Sex Education, Environmental Issues, Families, Relationships,
First Aid and Parentcraft. Pupils are also made aware of issues which are going on around the world eg The Tsunami disaster, Operation Christmas Child and are encouraged to help in some way.

Pupils participation is recorded and comments are made relating to how the pupils interact with others, join in discussions, develop confidence, self esteem, participate and may be lead a group in class.
Pupils’ active participation is recorded from work completed in Active Tutorials and through work completed in and out of school. We keep evidence of this in the pupils Citizenship files. (This may be written or photographic evidence) Pupils also complete units of work towards the ‘Personal and Social Skills’ entry level qualification. The parentcraft course is also certificated as part of the Unit of Accreditation Scheme.

Our pupils also participate in a Citizenship reward scheme and can achieve a Citizenship Badge for completing Acts of Kindness in school, at home, and in the community. You can help them gain these awards by sending us a letter telling us how your son/daughter has helped someone else at home or in your neighbourhood.

All pupils at Oakwood participate in a Community Service Programme
which is part of our Active Citizenship Work and which links into the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

The school is part of the National Healthy Schools Scheme and gained the full award in November 2003. All our pupils are fully aware of healthy eating and how they can achieve a healthy lifestyle

These are all our certificates we achieved from the National Healthy Schools Scheme.
