| Welcome to RE here at Oakwood!
As our pupils live in a multi-faith world, we study the 6
major world religions here at Oakwood. However, since we are
a Christian country by tradition, we do focus on Christianity
in more depth.
We are very lucky to have been able to buy lots of new resources
to support our learning in RE.
We have a “revamped” curriculum programme for
both KS3 and KS4 and a new assessment scheme, too. To help
you to do your best, lessons have clear Learning Objectives
and our achievement levels are written in a way that is pupil-friendly
and parent-friendly, too. We make extensive use of Talking
Partners and we use Success criteria so you know what you
need to have done to succeed.
In KS 3, pupils follow units from our scheme of work, which
has been adapted from QCA KS2 RE units.
In KS4, all pupils follow the WJEC Entry Level exam board
syllabus. They will be able to gain an Entry Level qualification
at Level 1,2 or 3 depending upon their achievement and ability.
Curriculum overview and the Units covered
In KS3, pupils study the 6 major world religions, and they
compare and contrast the similarities and differences. They
cover work within the two areas of attainment for RE – Learning
about Religion and Learning from Religion. They gain a basic
understanding of each religion by looking at key ideas, places
of worship, key festivals and ceremonies.
Year 7 Christianity and Judaism
Pupils begin by studying Christianity, and they go on to play
a major part in our Christmas celebrations both here in school
and at the local area church at Eccles Cross. The second
unit of Judaism follows on well, and pupils enjoy comparing
festivals and finding out about how Jewish families keep
their faith. From September 2007, this topic will tie in
well with the World War 2 work pupils will do in history
at the same time.
Year 8 Buddhism and Sikhism
Pupils enjoy the stories associated with the Buddha and they
begin to understand the more spiritual aspects this religion
has. They then go on to compare and contrast this with Sikhism,
and develop understanding and tolerance when they look at
the customs of dress associated with this religion.
Year 9 Islam and Hinduism
Pupils find out what it really means to be a Muslim in our
modern world, which is especially important given the current
world situation. It is an opportunity for sensitive discussion
and for greater understanding and tolerance. Pupils also
Enjoy finding out about Hiduism, with its colourful gods
and amazing stories. From September 2007, this opic will
tie in well with the India work pupils will do in Geography
at the same time.
In KS4, pupils study Christianity in depth for their WJEC
Entry Level exam course.
Year 10 Jesus and the foundation of Christianity
Pupils look at the bible accounts of the birth of Jesus, and
they study a selection of parables and miracles in detail.
They gain an understanding of Jesus as a leader and a teacher,
and they also learn about the events of Easter in greater
depth.
Year 11 Christian life and worship
Pupils compare and contrast different types of Christian church.
They learn about the key features within a church and how
these relate to worship. They find out about how the major
festivals of Christmas and Easter are celebrated by the church,
and they look at the rites of passage in detail. These include
baptism, confirmation, marriage and funerals.
Staff involved
In KS3 RE is currently taught by Mrs Southwood, Miss Watts and Miss Stobart in Year 7, by Miss Watts and Miss Stirling in Years 8 and 9. In KS4, Mrs Johnson
teaches RE to Year 9 and Year 10 and Miss Williams Year11. Pupils are also supported
in all RE lessons by our very talented team of teaching assistants
and 1:1 support staff.
Skills required and developed
The only skills required are to try your best, to enjoy your
learning and to be tolerant of those that may be different
to you. This will help you to achieve really well in RE. We
also like you to look after your homework book so you can show
off to your parents and carers!
Specialist equipment
We use a wide range of brand new resources and books to help
you to learn. We also use a range of websites and interactive
whiteboard software, including the award winning “Daydream”.
We like to record your doing your best work and so we also
use digital cameras and video cameras.
