Careers, Work Related Learning And Enterprise Education

The school aims, the Work Experience Programme, Business Education Partnership, College Links Programme, the National Framework 11-19, Vocational and Work-Related Learning at KS4, the Connexions Service Level Agreement have been used to formulate the Careers Education and Guidance Programme offered to students from Year 7 to 11.
All topics are evaluated and updated regularly to accommodate new recommendations, developments and initiatives.

Aims

The purpose of the programme is to help individual students understand themselves and the influences on them, investigate opportunities in learning and work, make and adjust plans to manage change and transition by incorporating relevant aims from the Personal Development Curriculum.

WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME (LEARNING THROUGH WORK)

All students have the opportunity of participating in the school’s Work Experience / Work Shadow Programme and / or the school’s Vocational Education Programme.

LEARNING ABOUT AND FOR WORK

  • The Learning Outcomes from KS3 and KS4 of the National Framework, Vocational and Work-Related Learning at KS4 are differentiated as appropriate to the cohort.

First Skills Profile: LEARNING ABOUT AND FOR WORK

This course is based on the unit structure of the Entry Level Certificate in Skills for Life and Work.
The key differences include:

  • Freedom of choice in the selection of units
  • Assessment and end of unit profiles are based on the successful completion of tasks
  • Certification is on demand following completion of the unit(s)

Each unit:

  • is self-contained and free-standing
  • designed to be delivered in 25-30 hours
  • provides an appropriate teaching framework
  • indicates relevant knowledge, understanding, skills and learning outcomes
  • offers practical advice and guidance
  • identifies portfolio evidence
  • is based on ten tasks
  • accreditation is by individual unit profiles recording the successful task completion
  • certification is on demand

Students have a Transition Plan and access to the Transition Adviser and Learning Mentor to help them make informed choices about their futures. The school’s Personal Adviser works with pupils and the Transition Adviser to discuss appropriate destinations for pupils that provide routes of progression. This will include information about all the options open to them, including opportunities to gain nationally recognised qualifications to the age of 19 and beyond. A Personal Adviser from the Connexions Service works with the Transition Adviser and usually attends the students’ Year 9, 10 and 11 Annual Reviews to offer advice on Post 16 provisions available.
