National Leader of Education

The school received confirmation of the above award in April 2009. Oakwood is the
only special school in Salford to have achieved this recognition, alongside St
Ambrose Barlow High School.

Below is a copy of the newspaper release prepared by the Public Relations and
Marketing Department.

Two Salford head teachers and their staff have been handed key support roles to help
schools with problems.

Janis Triska, of Oakwood High School, and Marie Garside, of St Ambrose Barlow RC
High School, are among about 100 UK heads recently appointed to the prestigious
role of national leader of education.

Their schools are also designated as national support schools by the National College
for School Leadership (NCSL). It means they can provide additional leadership to
struggling schools in the region.

Oakwood High, a specialist arts and technology college, is already supporting a
school in the Manchester area, said Janis Triska.

Both she and Marie Garside say their selection is recognition for the breadth and
depth of expertise in their schools across the whole curriculum.

Toby Salt, deputy chief executive of the NCSL, said: "Involvement in the scheme often
sees an improvement in the exam results of both the support schools and their clients
thanks to the hard work of all concerned.

Councillor John Warmisham, Salford City Council's lead member for Children's
Services, said: "I'm very proud that two of our outstanding head teachers have been
honoured in this way. Their dedication is helping to raise standards locally and
further afield. "
