Pupils embark on bold retail project importing and selling art from China
The pupils, buoyed by a recent buying trip to the Far East and subsequent exhibition and art sale in school, are excited about the prospect of the business venture. They will be expected to work with suppliers to prepare the store for opening on the 31
October and will then run the fully fitted shop, complete with till and PDQ facilities, for 1 week. The store will be selling imported art from China as well as lamps and lighting, some of which has been designed by Oakwood high school pupils themselves.
And for those people unable to get down to the Lowry, we will be setting up an online shop on this website to sell the imported works. The website (currently under construction) and ebay shop will be the next stage in the bold retail venture.
"Oakwood high school is always looking to enhance the provision for our pupils beyond the normal boundaries of the curriculum, this is one of a number of projects designed to develop our students business and enterprise skills as well as extending the schools international links” said Oakwood associate head teacher Mike Appleyard.
The store will add an extra dimension to the project and is expected to help students raise money to buy stock to develop the online store. Future profits will be put back into school funds.
The project is being supported by local lighting and art wholesalers, L.S.E. retail group. Based in Salford, LSE will help set up the store at the Lowry and will continue to offer help and advice for the online side of the business. Managing Director, David Gutfreund said “The entrepreneurial spirit shown by the students has been wonderful. They have managed to get the business going and I’m looking forward to offering any help and support I can to ensure the project is a success”
