Come Cook With Us! – Men’s cookery update 2011
Eccles Health Improvement service lead (funding/group support) : Kav Kaur
Oakwood High School: Mike Appleyard (initial contact/ room provision)
Oakwood High School :Tutor Support – Alison Bonilla
Previously known as the ‘Can’t Cook! Will Cook! Group, the men’s cookery group now known as ‘Come Cook with us! Has been established since March 2008 and has continued to run successfully since then. The group is now also constituted.
The group consists of 9 men who attend the sessions every Wednesdays 3-5pm at Oakwood High School. The aim of the programme is to cook healthy meals on a budget and to raise awareness of key health messages.
Oakwood High school very kindly offered the food technology facilities free of charge and have also offered tutor support. As the mens group was such a success, another group was set up on a Thursday which became a constituted community group in their own right. The name of this group is the Eccles Cookeez. This group also focused on healthy eating and ran similarly to the mens group. A member of the mens cookery group took a lead on the cookeez group through passing on healthy eating messages, delivering cookery sessions and building an excellent relationship with the group. This is an excellent example of capacity building for the health improvement service in partnership with Oakwood High.
Without the support of Oakwood High this project would never have continued for this length of time. Below are further examples of good practice, capacity building and group sustainability:
- ‘Drop in’ event 13/07/2011. Come Cook With Us/ Oakwood High hosted an afternoon of healthy food for pupils of the school, funders, and council delegates. Over 100 pupils attended the event. Excellent feedback from pupils and agencies who attended.
- New beginners 10 week cookery group set up by Health Improvement service. This was lead by Health Improvement staff and another member of the Mens cookery Group (Roy Jones).
- Due to the success and demand of previous beginner’s course a new beginner’s course has been setup beginning January 2012. Again Roy Jones along with HIS staff will be delivering the 10 week course.
