Foundation Studies

The visit was to look at the new build to house a foundation studies course aimed at students who are working at P-level’s 4 – 7/8

The unit is called New Horizons which is the name of the course run by ASDAN.

There are five students on the programme who started started this September. I am not sure if that is because there is no other provision post 16 in the area that can cater for this kind of student and so it is looked on a specialist provision. The College will cater for 8 students next year and will not take from the Bury authority and surrounding areas. The priority is to identify the appropriate student profile to fit the programme.

Progression from the New Horizons course is through completion of several other ASDAN/Edexcel courses at entry 1 through to entry 3. The student day is ten am till four pm and transport is provided by Bury LA. Students are encouraged to use a variety of community facilities as part of the programme. All students make their own lunch every day in class and then eat it in the canteen.

They are in the process of building a new section for the college that will incorporate a ‘mini Millgate’ shopping centre with a corridor of shops which the students will run. They will use it for work experience throughout the college. Bury college have good links with ‘BEST’ which helps with supported employment.

The progression route from school to post 16 posed difficulties in finding the appropriate level of course offering the right amount of support and time necessary to allow students to mature in college. It was felt that these courses were not available, not just in Salford but in many authorities. Courses are needed that would support students working from Entry Level 3 progressing to level 1 and level 1 – 2 and so on. There was also the difficulty in finding enough pre -Entry Level courses available to run 3/4/5/ day courses which SEN pupils/ parents need.

Main finding.

  1. Once a student has completed Entry Level Three, the only progression is to move onto a Level One course. Often this jump is too great for our students, who need an intermediate level, offering support: academically, socially and emotionally, building up confidence, self esteem and skills preparing them to succeed at a higher level.
  2. Pre- Entry Level courses need to be developed.
  3. Parents are often forced to make difficult choices based on allowing their child to extend their college life, opposed to attending courses which will progress their education.
